An opportunity is available for a self-motivated, detail-oriented team player to fill the position of Environmental Specialist II at the Florida Park Service District 1 Administrative Office. The office is located in St. Andrews State Park in Panama City Beach, Florida.

Pay:

Base salary $3,362.58 month/$40,351.04 annual

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Compliance with the processing requirements of Chapter 215.422, F.S. is mandatory. Persistent failure to comply with this section by any agency of the state shall constitute good cause for discharge of employees duly found responsible, or predominantly responsible, for failure to comply.

The position focuses on natural resource management and will be highly focused on the planning, coordination, and implementation of the districtwide prescribed fire program. In addition, the position includes administration, maintenance, visitor service, and professional contacts. The applicant must be able to work independently and as part of a team to accomplish common resource management objectives. Responsible for both office and field work under sometimes difficult field conditions.

Oversees, in coordination with field staff and partnering agencies, the district’s fire management program.

Participates in execution of all facets of prescribed burning.

Coordinates with other District 1 Environmental Specialists to ensure that prescribed fire objectives are consistent with natural community restoration projects, revegetation efforts, and imperiled species management.

Provides guidance, training, and assistance in all phases of planning, implementation of prescribed fire and natural community restoration.

Represents the division and/or district at regional working groups, partnerships, committees, and approved professional meetings.

Identifies, evaluates, and reports environmental impacts within and outside encroachments to District 1 natural and cultural resources and provides professional guidance for management.

Provides information and contributes to the development of optimum boundaries of park units and prepares assessments for land acquisition.

Maintains District 1 equipment including processing requisitions and obtaining approved purchase orders to support this activity.

Maintains assigned equipment. Submits attendance and leave, travel, and other reports and logs required by DEP and DRP.

Conducts research and coordinates information needed to plan for and develop programs for environmental restoration, the protection of listed species, fire management, unit management plans, as well as other natural and cultural resource management activities within District 1.

Identifies, evaluates and reports environmental impacts within and outside encroachments to District 1 natural and cultural resources and provides professional guidance for their management.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Natural resource management practices to include prescribed burning and natural community restoration

SKILL IN:

  • Planning and implementation of prescribed fire to achieve ecological objectives
  • The utilization of computers and software including Microsoft Office, Word, email

ABILITY TO:

  • Successfully meet position specific DRP Burn Standards for prescribed fire
  • Coordinate and implement natural resource management practices
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Work independently
  • Understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to natural resource management and environmental programs
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Interface with the public, other agencies, and internal staff in a tactful and courteous manner

Minimum Qualifications:

Valid Driver License

A bachelor’s from a college or university in one of the physical or natural sciences, forestry, natural resources, or environmental studies; or any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described above, for a total of four years.

The following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) training is required and must be obtained prior to employment: S-130, S-190, I-100, S-131. Passing of moderate pack test must be completed prior to employment, and annually thereafter.
